Cloister Quarter converted into “heart of Veghel”

5 October 2023

Project Kloosterkwartier, Veghel

The Monastery Quarter comprises two national monuments, a park, a canal, schools, a boarding school, and a “zigzag building”. It is situated between Veghel town centre and the popular Vijverwijk district. It is a neighbourhood with character, plenty of green space, and room to spare.

In the immediate vicinity, there are schools, childcare facilities, sports clubs, and amenities. There is a place for everyone here. It's a quiet area, but within a few minutes' walk, you'll find yourself in the middle of the bustling market square.

Realisation of 178 dwellings and LeefgoedCentrum

The grounds of the Kloosterkwartier, (comprising the monastery/mother house & chapel of the Franciscan Sisters and the former Bernhoven hospital site) are to become the social “heart of Veghel”. This is entirely in line with the philosophy of the sisters, who lived here for over 175 years fulfilling their social mission (with particular focus on education, care and schooling).

Together with the sisters and Zenzo Maatschappelijk Vastgoed, plans have been made for the development of a contemporary living environment on approximately 7 to 8 hectares. Within this historic setting, eight comfortable apartment buildings of various types and sizes will be realised, meeting current standards. For young and old, and for people with and without care needs.

Four new residential buildings (C, D, G and H), the monastery (motherhouse) to be renovated into residences, and the LeefgoedCentrum in the chapel have been purchased by Area Wonen. vb&t projectmanagement B.V. is involved in the development on behalf of Area. From the establishment of the collaboration between parties and the takeover of this part of the development, through to planning and realisation.

A total of 178 homes will be built. The chapel will be renovated and converted into a 'LeefgoedCentrum' (a centre for living and community) and a community centre in the neighbourhood.

Estate Veghel

The development of Leefgoed Veghel in the chapel is a collaborative effort between various parties. An intention agreement was signed in September 2019, and parties are working together within a core group to shape the Leefgoed.

Leefgoed is a place where people and organisations support each other and develop activities together, taking the power of the community as a starting point.

Various organisations, local residents and the municipality are making Leefgoed possible. There is space for families, people with extra care needs, schoolchildren, associations, entrepreneurs, etc. In short, a place where everyone is welcome and feels at home.

The estate provides space for a unique society: Everyone uses each other's talents; people do more for each other thanks to the integrated, neighbourhood-focused approach. Residents' wishes are fulfilled to the fullest; there's a flexible network where everyone does what they're good at. It's primarily for residents and not just for professionals.

The repurposing of the heritage of the Congregation of Franciscan Sisters is proving to be a success.
